Common questions

Start with the useful bits.

What do the three modes do?

Custom Orbit charges to your upper limit, then runs on battery down to your lower limit, with the charger still connected. Natural Flow is a deep orbit whose limits change a little each time (about 18–22% at the bottom, 90–95% at the top). Desk Hold stays near one level while you work on the charger.

Why is my Mac using its battery while plugged in?

That’s your orbit working. Between your limits Battery Orbit rests the battery on purpose, then charges again when it reaches your lower limit. The Dashboard headline always says what is happening and until when.

What happens if I unplug, sleep or restart?

Unplugged, your Mac simply runs on battery. When you plug back in, or after sleep or a restart, your orbit continues by itself once the charger is steady. You don’t need to resume anything.

I can’t see the ring in my menu bar.

macOS hides menu bar icons that don’t fit, often behind the camera notch. Hold ⌘ and drag the ring next to the clock; macOS remembers the spot. If it’s hidden, Battery Orbit’s Dashboard says so and opens Menu Bar settings for you.

How is this different from macOS’s own battery settings?

macOS can stop charging at a level, and Optimized Battery Charging can wait before finishing to 100%. Battery Orbit also lets your Mac run on its battery down to a lower limit with the cable still connected, then charges again. Turn the macOS features off so the two don’t compete.

How do I get a full battery for a trip?

Choose “Charge to 100% once” in Modes, or click the ring in the menu bar and choose Charge to 100%. Your usual mode takes over again afterwards.

How do I stop Battery Orbit?

Pause hands charging back to macOS straight away. Quitting the app doesn't stop your orbit: it keeps running in the background until you press Pause. To remove it completely, run the uninstaller from the Download page; it puts charging back to normal first.

Why does the installer ask for my administrator password?

Changing how your Mac charges needs a small system helper. macOS asks for your password once to install it. The helper only manages charging.

macOS says charging is on hold or limited. Is that Battery Orbit?

It may be macOS’s own Optimized Battery Charging or Charge Limit. Turn those off in System Settings › Battery so the two don’t compete; the welcome screen and Settings in the app open that page for you.

Which Macs are supported?

MacBooks with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 14.4 Sonoma or later. Intel Macs aren’t supported.

Is it a subscription?

No. It’s a one-time purchase with a lifetime licence: $7.99 per Mac for the first 30 orders, then $14.99. See the refund policy for returns.

Can I use one licence on several Macs?

A standard licence key works on one Mac. For more, buy one key for several Macs: 3 Macs $20.99, 5 Macs $34.99, 10 Macs $62.99. Enter the same key on each Mac. A key stays tied to the Mac it was activated on; if you replace your Mac, write to support from the address you bought with and we’ll move it.

Where do I enter my licence key?

Your key arrives by email right after checkout. Open Battery Orbit and paste it when asked. Lost the email? Write to support from the address you bought with and we’ll send it again.

Is there a free trial?

No, but you can ask for a full refund within 7 days of buying if it isn’t right for your Mac.

How do I update Battery Orbit?

New versions are on the Download page: enter your licence key to get the new installer and run it over the old one; your mode, limits and history stay as they are. Updates are included with your licence.
